These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. -- I John 5:13

"The Lord Looks On The Heart!"
Key Passage: I Samuel 16:7
Evangelist Clifford M. Smith, Th.D.

The 16th chapter of I Samuel refers to the anointing of young David as the new king of Israel. When God calls someone to "HIS" service, he looks on the heart of the servant. Let's see what the Bible says in I Samuel 16: 7, "But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature: because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth: for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart." In the Bible, you will find, that God used people, that had a "HUMBLE HEART" (Those that wanted "God 's Glory" instead of seeking "Their Own Glory"). John "The Baptist" said something very special concerning serving the Lord Jesus Christ in John 3:30, "He must increase, but I must decrease." In the "Sermon on the Mount", Christ says in Matthew 7:21-23, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." There are many false deceivers, that use the Lord's work for their own glory.

Next, I'd like to share some of the things, that I've witnessed in the last 30 years in the ministry about this subject. They are as follows:

There's a baptist church with thousands of souls saved every year and a Bible college with hundreds of graduates every year serving the Lord world-wide. But little did I know, that many of the church members worshipped the pastor so much, that they said to me,"If they had to choose between God's Word and the Pastor's Word, that they would choose the Pastor's Word. I said to them, how "stupid" can you be. They said "We trust his interpretation of the scriptures." I shook my head and walked away. During this time, it was revealed to the church, that this pastor for the last 20 years may have committed adultery with one of the secretaries of the church(Which was the wife of a close deacon friend). IMPORTANT NOTE: This is an example of that old saying, "You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover!"

I have seen churches, that show favortism to the wealthy and to those, which hold political office in a community or with the state, but will "snubb" and "refuse to associate" with the poor and needy of a community. I have also seen these same churches frown upon people attending church in casual dress, instead of dress-suits with ties(For Men) and expensive dresses(For Women). Some churches, like to "crucify with their tongue" the following: (1) Men's shoulder length hair and hair on their face and (2) Women's pant-suits , length of dress, cosmetics, jewelry, and hair length.

In Conclusion, some of the best Christians, that I know, are just "Down to Earth" simple folk and not "High-minded" people. No wonder, that many people don't attend any church, because of all the "Prejudice" and the "Hippocrates!" David had already killed a bear and a lion, before God chose him to be King (To replace King Saul). Surely, the giant Goliath didn't stand a chance fighting David, because David trusted the Lord (God of Israel) to fight his battles (It was by "God's Power", NOT the power of "David's Strength." Even with all of the great things, that King David accomplished in his life, he also committed adultery and would probably be convicted on conspiracy to commit murder. David sought forgiveness of these sins later in life and God forgave him. Why did God choose him, because he was a man after God's Own Heart (I Samuel 13:14)! If you choose to be God's servant, You Must Have The Heart Of God! God used a shepherd boy, a wheat-farmer and even fishermen to do his work(And so many more). Remember, "God is Sovereign" and will use "Whomever" and "Whatever", he chooses to fulfill "His Divine Will" in life. In most cases of fulfilling "God's Will", He chooses a "Child of God", with a "Pure Heart" and with the desire of pleasing the Lord." "IT'S NOT WHAT'S ON THE OUTSIDE THAT COUNTS, BUT WHAT'S ON THE INSIDE!"
